Sept mois seulement après l’investiture du président Jean-Bertrand Aristide, le 7 février 1991, le rêve démocratique né de l’élection du 16 décembre 1990 fut brutalement interrompu. Derrière les militaires putschistes se dessinaient les intérêts d’une élite économique hostile aux aspirations populaires, avec la complicité ou la passivité d’une partie de la communauté internationale. Le coup d’État du 30 septembre 1991 ne visait pas seulement un président : il cherchait à étouffer l’espoir immense qu’Aristide avait fait naître parmi les masses haïtiennes.
Je n’oublierai jamais ce lundi matin. J’étais alors étudiant en science politique à Brooklyn College, militant engagé, mari et père de deux très jeunes enfants. Ma femme était au travail, et j’étais à la maison avec notre fils de deux ans et notre petite fille de cinq mois lorsqu’un ami étudiant m’appela pour m’annoncer que les militaires venaient de renverser le président Aristide.
Sans attendre, porté par la colère, l’inquiétude et le sens du devoir, je préparai un petit sac pour les enfants : quelques biberons de lait, de jus et d’eau, ainsi que des couches. Je pris le chemin de Manhattan, vers le siège des Nations-unies, où se formaient les premiers groupes de protestataires. Nous n’étions qu’une cinquantaine, mais notre présence disait déjà notre refus. Nous demandions que des sanctions soient prises contre les militaires de Port-au-Prince si leur coup de force venait à se confirmer.
