À l’étranger, on a tendance à fondre toutes les personnes noires dans une seule et même catégorie globale. Pourtant, pour un fils de Dessalines, le terme « Afro-Américain » ne suffit pas à définir son essence. Entre une épopée révolutionnaire unique et une culture bâtie sur la résistance, revendiquer l’identité « Haïtienne » est un devoir de mémoire pour ne pas perdre son âme.
Lorsqu'un Haïtien se tient au milieu d'une foule à New York ou à Paris, brandissant une pancarte où l'on lit : « Je ne suis pas Afro-Américain, je suis Haïtien », il ne s'agit pas d'un simple jeu de mots. C'est un cri qui surgit du fond de l'histoire. C'est une manière de dire au monde que notre couleur de peau n'est pas notre seule définition ; il y a une âme, une langue et un héritage historique qui nous escortent.
1804 : Le tournant de l’histoire mondiale
La différence fondamentale entre un Haïtien et un Afro-Américain réside dans le mois de janvier 1804. Alors que nos frères aux États-Unis continuaient de lutter sous le joug de l'esclavage pendant plus de 60 ans encore après notre indépendance, nos ancêtres avaient déjà brisé leurs chaînes définitivement.
Nous ne sommes pas seulement des « descendants d’esclaves » ; nous sommes les héritiers de ceux qui ont eu le courage de défier la plus puissante armée de l'époque pour créer la première République noire libre au monde. Comme l'a démontré l'illustre savant Jean Price-Mars dans son œuvre « Ainsi parla l’oncle », notre identité n'est pas un accident, mais un choix culturel et un héritage à fructifier. Cette réalité forge une psychologie distincte : l'Haïtien ne grandit pas avec la mentalité de celui qui demande la « permission » d'exister. Il se sent maître de lui-même, de sa terre et de son destin.
Une culture insoumise
Si l'expérience afro-américaine s'est construite sur un combat pour l'intégration dans une société où ils étaient minoritaires, l'expérience haïtienne s'est bâtie sur la souveraineté. Notre identité est cimentée dans la langue Créole une langue qui n'est pas seulement un outil de communication, mais un code secret de résistance depuis le Bois-Caïman.
De notre soupe au giraumon (soup joumou), symbole de notre liberté, à notre religion populaire et notre conception de la vie en « lakou », notre culture est un rempart contre l'assimilation. En voulant nous étiqueter « Afro-Américains », on occulte ces profondeurs. On oublie que nous possédons une littérature riche dans les deux langues, une peinture qui brille mondialement, et une musique dont les vibrations vont du tambour rada au jazz et au compas.
Refuser l’invisibilité dans la masse
Pourtant, la réalité contemporaine montre que dans la diaspora, on tente de nous rendre invisibles en nous fondant dans la masse « noire ». Ce sont pourtant deux réalités sociales différentes. Un Haïtien vivant outre-mer porte en lui le fardeau et la fierté d'une nation possédant un drapeau, un hymne national et une histoire diplomatique qui a aidé d'autres nations d'Amérique latine à conquérir leur liberté.
C'est pourquoi, dire « Je suis Haïtien », c'est honorer le sang versé à Vertières. C'est rappeler au monde que nous ne sommes pas une « minorité en quête d'identité », mais un peuple porteur d'une civilisation vieille de plus de deux siècles.
Un portrait de fierté
L'image de cette main brandissant ce message de revendication est une déclaration d'amour à la mère patrie, Haïti. À une époque où notre pays traverse des moments difficiles, revendiquer qui nous sommes est le premier pas vers la reconstruction de notre dignité. Nous sommes un peuple vaillant, un peuple qui a un nom, et ce nom n'est pas une étiquette étrangère.
Nous sommes Haïtiens. Nous l'étions en 1804, nous le resterons partout où nous passerons.
