Près de 15 millions de décès supplémentaires associés à la pandémie de Covid-19 en 2020 et 2021 (OMS)
De nouvelles estimations de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS) montrent que le nombre total de décès associés directement ou indirectement à la pandémie de Covid-19 (qualifié de « surmortalité ») entre le 1er janvier 2020 et le 31 décembre 2021 était d'environ 14,9 millions (fourchette de 13,3 millions à 16,6 millions).
« Ces données qui donnent à réfléchir soulignent non seulement l'impact de la pandémie, mais aussi la nécessité pour tous les pays d'investir dans des systèmes de santé plus résilients qui peuvent soutenir les services de santé essentiels pendant les crises, y compris des systèmes d'information sanitaire plus solides », a déclaré le Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Directeur général de l'OMS.
« L'OMS s'est engagée à travailler avec tous les pays pour renforcer leurs systèmes d'information sanitaire afin de générer de meilleures données pour de meilleures décisions et de meilleurs résultats », a-t-il ajouté.
La surmortalité est calculée comme la différence entre le nombre de décès survenus et le nombre qui serait attendu en l'absence de la pandémie sur la base des données des années précédentes.
La surmortalité comprend les décès associés à la Covid-19 directement (dus à la maladie) ou indirectement (en raison de l'impact de la pandémie sur les systèmes de santé et la société). Les décès liés indirectement à la Covid-19 sont attribuables à d'autres problèmes de santé pour lesquels les gens n'ont pas pu accéder à la prévention et au traitement parce que les systèmes de santé étaient surchargés par la pandémie.
Décès excédentaires concentrés en Asie du Sud-Est, en Europe et dans les Amériques
Le nombre estimé de décès excédentaires peut également être influencé par les décès évités pendant la pandémie en raison de risques plus faibles de certains événements, comme les accidents de la route ou les blessures professionnelles.
La plupart des décès excédentaires (84%) sont concentrés en Asie du Sud-Est, en Europe et dans les Amériques. Quelque 68% des décès excédentaires sont concentrés dans seulement 10 pays dans le monde. Les pays à revenu intermédiaire représentent 81% des 14,9 millions de décès excédentaires (53% dans les pays à revenu intermédiaire inférieur et 28% dans les pays à revenu intermédiaire supérieur) sur la période de 24 mois, avec des revenus élevés et faibles pays représentant chacun 15% et 4%, respectivement.
Les estimations pour une période de 24 mois (2020 et 2021) incluent une ventilation de la surmortalité par âge et par sexe. Ils confirment que le nombre de décès dans le monde était plus élevé chez les hommes que chez les femmes (57% d'hommes, 43% de femmes) et plus élevé chez les personnes âgées. Le décompte absolu des décès en excès est affecté par la taille de la population. Le nombre de décès en excès pour 100.000 donne une image plus objective de la pandémie que les données de mortalité due à la Covid-19 qui ont été rapportées.
« La mesure de la surmortalité est un élément essentiel pour comprendre l'impact de la pandémie. Les changements dans les tendances de la mortalité fournissent aux décideurs des informations pour orienter les politiques visant à réduire la mortalité et à prévenir efficacement les crises futures. En raison des investissements limités dans les systèmes de données dans de nombreux pays, la véritable ampleur de la surmortalité reste souvent cachée », a déclaré le Dr Samira Asma, Sous-Directrice générale pour les données, l'analyse et la livraison à l'OMS. « Ces nouvelles estimations utilisent les meilleures données disponibles et ont été produites à l'aide d'une méthodologie robuste et d'une approche totalement transparente ».
« Les données sont le fondement de notre travail quotidien pour promouvoir la santé, assurer la sécurité du monde et servir les personnes vulnérables. Nous savons où se situent les lacunes dans les données et nous devons collectivement intensifier notre soutien aux pays, afin que chaque pays ait la capacité de suivre les épidémies en temps réel, d'assurer la prestation des services de santé essentiels et de protéger la santé de la population », a déclaré le Dr Ibrahima Socé. Collaboration mondiale
La production de ces estimations est le résultat d'une collaboration mondiale soutenue par les travaux du Groupe consultatif technique pour l'évaluation de la mortalité liée à la Covid-19 et les consultations nationales.
Ce groupe, convoqué conjointement par l'OMS et le Département des affaires économiques et sociales des Nations Unies (UN DESA), est composé de nombreux experts mondiaux de premier plan, qui ont développé une méthodologie innovante pour générer des estimations de mortalité comparables même lorsque les données sont incomplètes ou indisponibles.
Cette méthodologie s'est avérée inestimable car de nombreux pays n'ont toujours pas la capacité de surveiller de manière fiable la mortalité et ne collectent et ne génèrent donc pas les données nécessaires pour calculer la surmortalité. En utilisant la méthodologie accessible au public, les pays peuvent utiliser leurs propres données pour générer ou mettre à jour leurs propres estimations.
« Le système des Nations Unies travaille ensemble pour fournir une évaluation faisant autorité du bilan mondial des vies perdues à cause de la pandémie. Ce travail est une partie importante de la collaboration continue de l'UN DESA avec l'OMS et d'autres partenaires pour améliorer les estimations de la mortalité mondiale », a déclaré Liu Zhenmin, Secrétaire général adjoint des Nations Unies aux affaires économiques et sociales.
Stefan Schweinfest, Directeur de la Division des statistiques de UN DESA, a ajouté : « Le manque de données rend difficile l'évaluation de la véritable ampleur d'une crise, avec de graves conséquences pour la vie des gens. La pandémie a été un rappel brutal de la nécessité d'une meilleure coordination des systèmes de données au sein des pays et d'un soutien international accru pour la construction de meilleurs systèmes, y compris pour l'enregistrement des décès et d'autres événements vitaux ».
