Le judoka Philippe Abel Metellus sera à Paris !

Le rêve d'enfant du judoka Philippe Abel Metellus, 73kg, va se réaliser puisqu'il sera présent à la XXXIIIe Olympiade qui se déroulera à Paris du 26 juillet au 11 août 2024. Le judoka haïtiano-canadien, qui depuis deux ans finance sa préparation et sa participation à diverses compétitions internationales, a obtenu sa qualification pour les Jeux olympiques grâce à son quota intercontinental.
Lors des Jeux d'été de Tokyo 2020, il était classé 11e au classement intercontinental mais la Fédération internationale de judo (IFJ) avait choisi les dix mieux classés et pour cette édition Philippe Abel Metellus a hérité de la 10e place au classement continental grâce à ses résultats obtenus sur les tapis. Et il sera à Paris pour défendre les couleurs de la délégation haïtienne.
Contacté par téléphone, le futur olympien, âgé de 34 ans, s'est réjoui de sa qualification tout en déclarant qu'il s'agissait d'un rêve de 22 ans devenu réalité.
« J'ai commencé à pratiquer le judo à l'âge de 12 ans et j'ai toujours rêvé de représenter mon pays aux JO. En 2020, j'étais à un pas d'y parvenir et pour cette édition, j'ai investi tous mes économies, mon temps pour réaliser ce rêve. Je suis fier de le concrétiser cette fois-ci », a déclaré le futur olympien qui vient de terminer le week-end dernier sur la 5e marche du podium de la dernière compétition éliminatoire des JO qui s'est déroulée à Lima.
Concernant sa préparation avant les Jeux, le qualifié Metellus a fait savoir qu'il fera de son mieux pour rechercher des fonds pour poursuivre sa préparation car, selon lui, en deux ans, il a dépensé ses économies pour sa préparation. Tout en espérant que le Comité olympique haïtien (COH) prendra en charge sa préparation cette fois-ci.
« J'espère que le COH va désormais prendre en charge ma préparation car je suis épuisé financièrement pour continuer ma préparation », a-t-il souhaité tout en espérant réaliser une très bonne participation à cette XXXIIIe Olympiade et pourquoi pas revenir avec une médaille au grand bonheur du peuple haïtien.
De son côté, le directeur sportif, Thony Charles de la Fédération haïtienne de judo (FHJ) a félicité Philippe Abel Metellus pour sa qualification tout en soulignant que sa participation à ces Jeux était acquise sur le tapis et non une « Wild Card ». Le directeur sportif a également félicité sa Fédération pour la régularité de ses athlètes toujours présents aux JO depuis 2008. Mais, il a regretté que Meli Jennifer Etienne n'ait pas eu la chance de compter des points pour augmenter son quota international.
« Jennifer était sur la bonne voie au classement des quotas mais à cause d'interférences, elle a raté plusieurs compétitions qui pourraient lui permettre d'avoir des points pour obtenir sa qualification pour Paris », a regretté le directeur sportif Charles tout en espérant que la prochaine fois les décideurs acceptent de laisser la place aux spécialistes de prendre les décisions pour que les sportifs ne soient pas des victimes comme ce fut le cas pour Méli Jennifer EnÉtienne.
Par ailleurs, le directeur sportif de la FHJ Thony Charles a informé que sa Fédération prépare déjà la prochaine génération puisque la sélection nationale juvénile participera en août prochain en terre voisine aux qualifications pour les Jeux panaméricains de judo 2025 qui auront lieu sur le sol paraguayen.
Rappelons qu'outre Philippe Abel Metellus (judo), Haïti compte déjà trois autres qualifiés pour les JO 2024 dont Lynnzee Elise Brown (gymnastique), Christopher Borzor (athlétisme) et Cédrick Belony-Dulièpre (boxe). Les judokas participeront aux Jeux du 27 juillet au 4 août 2024.
