L'Argentine valide son billet pour les quarts et une première pour le Canada

Pour sa deuxième sortie, l'Argentine de Lionel Messi, malgré sa domination constante dans un MetLife Stadium bondé (82 000 places) et sous le bruit assourdissant de ses supporters, a dû attendre la 88e minute de jeu pour battre le Chili du vieux briscard portier chilien Claudio Bravo sur un but marqué par Lautaro Martinez qui a repris de volée un ballon dégagé suite à un corner botté par le capitaine de l'Albiceleste Lionel Messi. A noter que le match a été interrompu avant la fin de la première mi-temps en raison du malaise d'un arbitre assistant qui s'est effondré sur le terrain et a dû être soigné.
Suite à cette victoire, les coéquipiers de l'Haïtiano-Canadien occupent la 2e place du groupe A avec 3 points (-1) mais préservent leurs chances de qualification pour les quarts de finale. Pour atteindre cet objectif, ils devront réaliser un bon résultat lors de la 3e journée où ils devront affronter le Chili qui ne compte qu'un point, tout comme le Pérou qui accueillera à Miami l'Albiceleste de Messi, déjà qualifié et rêvant de terminer la phase de groupes avec un 3e succès consécutif. Les deux matches se joueront samedi à la même heure pour éviter tout calcul.
